Beneath Barnsley’s housing estates. Community archaeology, schools workshops, community engagement, exhibitions. Project design and management. Grant writing. Technical reports.
inHeritage worked with local community group Romero Communities to create, secure funds for and deliver Hands on History, a 3-year HLF-funded community history project in Athersley, New Lodge and Smithies (Barnsley).
Local residents participated in archaeological test pitting, fieldwalking and geophysics surveys to discover the suburb’s rural past, before the 1950s housing estates were built.
Children from 3 local primary schools explored archaeology by digging test pits, handling finds and meeting archaeologists in school. inHeritage also provided Art & Archaeology workshops, where pupils discovered what their finds could reveal about their local past, and developed their drawing skills to create art based on their finds.
Started: August 2013. Completed: Ongoing to 2016.
