Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site

inHeritage are delighted to be working for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Team and DerwentWISE to help progress interpretation across the whole of the site.

With a range of venues under different ownership and spread out geographically, along with limited resources for Derbyshire County Council to provide support, it has been difficult for the DVMWHS sites to see their place in the bigger picture when designing interpretation.
The interpretation plan is full of relevant recommendations and there is a value in encouraging people planning interpretation in the DVMWHS to refer to this underused resource. However, it  is little known or used by partners.
From a visitor perspective it is difficult to plan an itinerary that explores the core themes in an easily digestible way. Although we have limited understanding of our audience, at many venues it is hard to find direct answers to some of the questions thrown up by the DVMWHS strap line: What is in the Valley? Why did it change the world? How did it change the world?

Partner organisations in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site brainstorm words that describe the whole site

We will be working with the WHS Team and DerwentWISE to engage partners about opportunities for interpretation, to produce an action plan based upon the interpretation plan and to develop a digital itinerary across the whole of the World Heritage Site using Buxton Museum’s Pocket Wonders website.
The project is funded by DerwentWISE, a Landscape Conservation Partnership in the Lower Derwent Valley funded by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
